What to pack for a midweek break in the UK

Packing a suitcase

When packing for a midweek break in the UK, it’s important to be prepared for various weather conditions and to bring along items that will ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable time, no matter the weather. We often pack far more for a UK trip than we do when we’re going abroad, just because the weather is so changeable. It’s certainly best to be prepared!

To help you pack for one of your next midweek breaks UK destinations are currently offering, here’s our helpful guide on what to pack:

Clothes

British weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to pack versatile clothing! Here’s what you definitely need in your suitcase, even if you’re visiting in the summer:

  • Layers: Pack layers to adjust to changing temperatures. This includes lightweight jumpers, cardigans, and long-sleeve tops.
  • Waterproof jacket: This is essential for the UK, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors. A good-quality, lightweight waterproof jacket will protect you from the rain without being too bulky. Our top tip is make sure it’s breathable too!
  • Comfortable shoes: If you’re planning on exploring or doing outdoor activities, bring comfortable walking shoes or trainers. Waterproof shoes or walking boots are a good idea if you’re visiting the countryside or coastal areas, and a must if you’re going hiking in the hills.
  • Casual outfits: Pack casual day clothes like jeans, leggings, or chinos, depending on your plans and style. Make sure they’re comfortable for sightseeing or relaxing.
  • Evening wear: If you plan to dine out or enjoy an evening activity, pack a slightly smarter outfit, such as a nice shirt, dress, or blouse.
  • Sleepwear: Don’t forget comfortable pyjamas or sleepwear. If you’re staying somewhere cooler, warmer nightwear might be needed.
  • Socks and underwear: Pack enough for your stay, plus a few extras in case of wet weather.
  • Hat, gloves, and scarf: These items will keep you warm, especially in outdoor areas, and they’re a must in winter.

Toiletries

While some accommodations may provide basic toiletries, it’s always good to bring your favourites. I find most places don’t provide conditioner, so consider taking your own if necessary.

  • Shampoo and conditioner: Travel-sized bottles are great, or decant your usual products into reusable containers. You can also take solid shampoo to save on space.
  • Body wash or soap: Your preferred body wash or soap to ensure comfort during your stay.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste: An essential for any trip.
  • Deodorant: Pack your usual deodorant to stay fresh.
  • Moisturiser: UK weather can be drying, so pack a moisturiser for your face and body. I like to take a travel-sized tub so I can use it when I’m out and about.
  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, sunscreen can be important, particularly if you’ll be spending time outdoors and on the water.
  • Makeup: If you wear makeup, pack your daily essentials. For ease, opt for a smaller make-up bag.
  • Hairbrush/comb: A small, travel-sized hairbrush or comb is handy, and don’t forget hair ties or clips if needed.
  • Razor/shaving kit: If you shave, bring your razor and shaving cream/gel.
  • Medications: Any prescribed medication or supplements you take regularly, along with any over-the-counter remedies for common issues like headaches or allergies.
  • Hand sanitiser: Useful for keeping hands clean while out and about.

Entertainment and technology

While you may be out exploring, it’s always nice to have some entertainment options for downtime:

  • Books or e-reader: If you enjoy reading, bring a book or Kindle to relax in the evenings.
  • Phone and charger: These are essential for keeping in touch, navigating, and taking photos. For longer days out, bring your charger and perhaps a portable power bank.
  • Headphones or earphones: Handy for listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while travelling or relaxing.
  • Board games or cards: If you’re travelling with family or friends, pack a small game or deck of cards for evening entertainment.
  • Notebook and pen: A notebook and pen are always useful to journal or take notes during your trip.
