Are you the sort of traveller who tries to get away with hand luggage only, perhaps to dodge excessive airline baggage fees or to avoid lugging multiple suitcases around? Us too, and we reckon ditching the checked luggage has saved us a lot of money and hassle over the years. If you’re planning on doing the same, our top tip would be to choose your carry-on carefully. Sounds easy, but not all cases are made equal – we know, as we’ve tried and tested dozens over the last couple of decades.
Here’s what you need to consider:
The case needs to be big and light enough to hold all your essentials without exceeding the strict airline baggage size and weight limits. It also has to be robust to withstand the journey and easy to trundle along when you’re in the airport. Not an impossible brief, but we’re frequently surprised at how our past cases have never quite passed muster in all those departments.
Enter the Voyager Carry-On suitcase from Level8, which ticks all those boxes and then some. I’ve honestly never got quite so excited about a suitcase before and can’t wait to try it out on our next trip.

What is Level8 luggage all about?
Level8 have recognised that travel is increasingly becoming an integral part of our modern lives, whether we’re venturing abroad for a holiday or heading off on a business trip.
That’s a lot of moving around, and many of us find that the rigours of the journey can sometimes detract from the adventure itself. So Level8 have come up with a range of superbly designed cases to minimise travel hassle and make journeying joyful once more. And we’re on board all the way!
The Voyager Carry-On 20″ Case

This attractive hand-luggage case is both practical and elegant, with a sturdiness that isn’t clunky or too heavy. It’ll play the part perfectly whether you’re jetting off to explore exotic shores, heading to Europe for a weekend city break, or travelling on a business trip and need to look professional.
The Voyager Carry-On 20″ Case is a great all-rounder, one that you can rely on to get the job done, whilst giving all the right style vibes. It comes in a choice of colours, including black, navy and olive, all of which are subtle and sleek, just how we like it.
This feels like an adventure-ready case, designed for explorers who like a bit of practicality but also prefer not to leave their style behind when travelling around the world. Which is perfect for us as we often fly business class but then spend our holiday camping in deserts or journeying through rainforests. It’s a fabulous combination, and having a case that does the job means there’s one less thing to worry about when we’re moving around.
Case dimensions
To help you check that the Voyager Carry-On dimensions are in line with the luggage regulations at your favourite airline, here’s the numbers bit:
- Size: 54.5 x 38.5 x 25 cm (including handle and wheels)
- Capacity: 43 litres
- Weight: 3.7 kg
What we loved
Maximises space
One thing we’ve found with many other carry-on cases is that there’s not as much space inside as you might think. Rounded corners might look good, but the resulting reduced capacity means you’ll have to forgo a few pairs of socks, or even worse, pants! Yet what really frustrates me is the sliding handle casing often being inside the case rather than on the outside – this means clothes don’t lie flat and end up getting super wrinkled.
So, it really was a breath of fresh air to find that the Voyager Carry-On didn’t have any of these issues. Every inch of space is used in this case which is great if you’re travelling with just hand luggage and want to cram in as much as possible. You can pack things right into the corners, and lay clothes completely flat inside for less ironing on arrival, which is always good.
Multiple zip compartments

We loved that the separate compartments were fully zipped to keep things in place during the journey. Our previous case just had straps with plastic clips, which meant items would fall out every time we opened it. Not a good look when you’re at the airport and need to quickly whip out an item before going through security.
The compartment on the left also comes with a couple of internal pockets, which are super handy for storing smaller items that you don’t want to get lost in the jumble of clothing. We’ll be using them for things like electronics, chargers, kindles and snacks.
Dry-wet separation pocket

One of these internal pockets is made from waterproof material, which is probably our favourite feature of the Voyager Carry-On case. Partly because it’s super useful, and partly because we’ve never seen a suitcase with one before.
We often have evening flights after a day spent lounging around at our hotel, but always feel we can’t use the swimming pool because we’ll then have wet swim stuff to pack. This is one of the few things we argue about on our travels, but practicality always wins, and we forgo our swim. Yet with this waterproof section, missing out on pool time will be a thing of the past, as it’ll easily take a damp swimming costume or shorts, to keep everything else in the case dry during the flight.
Robust handle

We love the sturdy aluminium alloy telescopic handle, and the extra width means that the suitcase trundles along happily behind, without rocking from side to side like so many cases have a tendency to do. We have found that cases with just a single, t-shaped handle are a lot harder to manipulate and they’re a less stable too.
The handle on the Voyager case feels robust without being clunky and is easy to use on all those miles we probably walk around every airport terminal. And when you’re done with trundling, the handle slides smoothly back into its case without protruding and taking up extra baggage allowance height. A winner on all counts!
Spinner wheels
These are a must for wheeling your case this way and that through the airport, and we’re happy to report that the Voyager case glides effortlessly along with these 360° spinners. The wheels are pretty quiet too, so people won’t know you’re coming from a mile away, which is always good when you don’t want to be the centre of attention.

Built-in lock

There’s also a built-in lock, so you don’t need to worry about carrying separate padlocks with you, something we always manage to lose when we’re continually moving between destinations. It’s easy to set your own combination on the Voyager case lock, and the zip handles are easy to click into place when you’re ready to go.
We’ve had padlocks cut off before when travelling, so having this built-in lock gives greater peace of mind when you’re at the airport. It’s TSA-approved, which means that TSA security agents can use a master key to open your case if needed, without damaging the lock.
Not too heavy
We always opt for hard suitcases for the extra protection they give to our belongings, especially when we’ve treated ourselves to yet more pottery from Peru or delicate wooden carvings from South Africa. Yet with hard shells you often compromise on weight, which, if you’re travelling with just hand luggage, means it’s harder to keep within the airline carry-on weight allowance. It’s something we accept, but it’s frustrating nonetheless.
Expecting the same deal with the Voyager Carry-On, we were pleasantly surprised to find that at 3.7kg it actually weighs a bit less than our current hard cases (which are a little smaller too!). So yes, whilst it’s still heavier than fabric cases, if you’re like us and prefer a hard shell, the weight of this one isn’t too bad.
Lifetime Warranty
Lastly, if things do go wrong with the case, it’s good to know that Level8 provides a lifetime warranty. This covers functional aspects of the case, such as the wheels, zip, handle and the hard shell. As the case is super robust, this probably won’t be needed, but having this guarantee just shows that the brand is confident in the quality of their product, so we should be too.
Final thoughts
So, there you have it, the low-down on the Voyager Carry-On case. It’s hard to get excited about suitcases, after all they’re just there to transport your belongings safely from A to B. Yet seasoned travellers will know that the quality, functionality and capacity of your luggage can have a huge impact on your journey experience, so using a case that’s reliable and easy to use as well as being good looking really is a no-brainer. We think the Voyager Carry-On is one of the most well-designed cases we’ve come across and can’t wait to try it out on our upcoming adventures.
