It’s that time of year when you’re wracking your brains, trying to think of something fun and a bit different to give to the travellers in your life. We’re huge fans of personalising gifts, and our house is a testament to our global adventures, with pictures, photo books, wall hangings, and all manner of quirky souvenirs that we’ve picked up from remote corners of the world. Personalising our city map travel prints
This year, we’ve partnered with the lovely folks at My Picture to come up with inspiring ideas for some of the best Christmas gifts you could personalise for a traveller. Of course, we had to try them out for ourselves, and decided on map prints of two cities that are very dear to us: Marrakech in Morocco and Cusco in Peru.
We like to think of Marrakech as our second home – it’s somewhere we’ve visited more than anywhere else in the world, and we just love the ancient medina alleyways that always seem to lead to adventure (or a cool little tea shop with a dreamy roof terrace!). Cusco is where we went for our honeymoon, and where we returned for our 10 year anniversary. We have plans to go back for our 20th in a couple of years too! This Andean city is such a romantic place, where the streets are lined with Incan stonework while the mountains keep watch from above.
We’ve thought about getting some city wall maps for a long time, but never seemed to get around to it until now. What we loved about this order was that we could select our city and then zoom in and out to get it at the exact scale we wanted. You can also move the map around, so if there’s a particular area you want to focus on, that can be centralised.
We chose the main squares as our centre points – the Djemaa el Fna in Marrakech and the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, two places where we’ve spent a lot of time, drinking mint tea or eating llama steaks. You can also change the text co-ordinates on the print to a specific location if you like, so that’s what we did with the squares.
Once we’d decided on the orientation (you can have either landscape or portrait), it was time to chose a colour. They had several options, but we decided to go with the black as it looked sleek with the matching frame and will go nicely on the wall in our guest room.
The prints arrived this week and we’re really pleased with them – they look smart and striking and will be the perfect addition to our collection of travel memorabilia.
